MINIATURE PINSCHER
APPEARANCE
The Miniature Pinscher is a small but sturdy and athletic dog. The breed is known for its high stepping pace. It has a sturdy muzzle, a scissors type bite, sometimes cropped ears, and dark elliptical eyes. His coat is closing fitting, short, and sleek. The coloring of the Miniature Pinscher can be solid black, blue, or chocolate. These dogs weigh in at 8-12 pounds, and stand at around 9-13 inches in height.
PERSONALITY
The miniature pinscher is an energetic, playful, and friendly dog that thrives on owner interaction. This lively breed is always on the move, and is one of the most energetic breeds. Adventurous and always probing, this dog needs to be kept within enclosed areas to keep it from running after other animals of its size.
TRAINING
The miniature pinscher will need a firm owner who is consistent and can overlook their charming attitude which usually allows them to get what they want. These dogs are intelligent and can grasp obedience and little tricks quickly as long as their owner uses positive methods and repetition. Despite their size, the miniature pinscher has succeeded in agility and basic obedience trials.
EXERCISE
These little dogs will need lots of exercise per day. A backyard would be preferable so they can have an outdoor area to run around in, but it will need to be securely fenced. Daily walks are not sufficient for this breed to wear off their excess energy. Though dog parks can be a solution, the true Miniature Pinscher can go on the hunt at any moment, so an off-lead dog is a serious challenge with this breed.
SOCIALIZATION
With early socialization, they can be integrated into families, and get along with other dogs, pets, and children. Children, especially younger ones, must be encouraged to act gently and responsibly around this smaller breed to avoid injury for both parties. Socialization as puppies will help ensure they can co-exist and interact with other dogs as adults. They are outgoing, responsive and clever. They will be aloof around people they have never been introduced to, and are very protective of their owners.
LIVING CONDITIONS
Because of its size, the Miniature Pinscher makes a good apartment dog. It tends to be quite active within the home, though it should not be made to live outdoors. This breed is not suitable to cold climates, although it should be allowed to enjoy the outdoors in moderate weather conditions.
GROOMING
Grooming is easy, as the smooth, short-haired coat requires little attention. Care must be taken in colder weather as the coat provides virtually no insulation from the cold. These dogs are relatively low shedders, and therefore may be suited to those suffering from allergies.
HEALTH ISSUES
The life expectancy of the Miniature Pinscher is around 13-15 years. This is a relatively healthy and robust breed, but there are some health problems to look out for, including: luxating patella, Legg Perthes, skin problems, cataracts, and PRA.
