TOY FOX TERRIER
APPEARANCE
The Toy Fox Terrier has a compact small body that is muscular and athletic. Their muzzle is long and their eyes have a curious expression to them. They have toned legs which help them in the hunt for mice or rats, and a naturally long tail that is docked for show purposes. The Toy Fox Terrier has a short hard coat that will come in white with black accents on the face, body and tail. Tan accents also occur in this breed.
PERSONALITY
The Toy Fox Terrier is known for its intelligence, adaptability, loyalty and eagerness to please. They enjoy being around people and are very active and animated dogs that remain playful their whole lives. Overall, their mixed toy and terrier heritage give them a well rounded personality. Like most terriers, they possess strong hunting instincts and a spirited “take charge” demeanor, while their toy origins give them a milder, more manageable disposition. They are good at traditional terrier activities, such as flushing out rodents and treeing squirrels, but also make for good family companions.
TRAINING
This breed is a clever little dog that will excel in training provided their owner is firm and consistent with them. They have been known to excel highly in basic obedience as they have a high intelligence level that just needs a gentle training method to encourage it. These dogs have the personality and trainability to become hearing dogs for the deaf or handicapped.
EXERCISE
This little dog will need about a half of hour of exercise per day and either a walk or time spent in a dog park will be perfect for them. These dogs tend to tire themselves out during the day so not to much activity will be needed.
SOCIALIZATION
However, he does not appreciate being roughly handled, and this means that he is best around older, gentle children. His eagerness to please coupled with his intelligence makes training less of a challenge, but beware - housebreaking could be quite a different matter. The Toy Fox Terrier gets along fine with other pets in most cases, but he will not be bossed around by them - the Toy Fox Terrier is not at all afraid to stand up to another animal.
LIVING CONDITIONS
Toy Fox Terrier will be perfect for people that live in apartments as they don’t require much room, although a back yard would be great so they have an outdoor area to run around in.
GROOMING
Grooming for the Cocker Spaniel can be a bit of a job. Its eyes will need cleaning from time to time and its coat will require occasional trimming. When brushing its coat, be gentle so as not to entangle the comb or brush with its hairs.
HEALTH ISSUES
The life expectancy of the Toy Fox Terrier is 12-15 years, and there are a number of health problems to look out for with this breed. This includes vWD, luxating patella, heart problems, seizures, and thyroid problems. The parents of the Toy Fox Terrier puppy should have OFA and CERF certificates, and you should also ask about patella clearance.
HISTORY
Descending from the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Toy Fox Terrier originates from England. He has gone on to become a very amiable companion as well as an effective mouse catcher. The breed was registered with the AKC in 2001.
