CHINESE CRESTED

APPEARANCE
Chinese Crested comes in two varieties – the hairless breed that only has hair on its head, tail and feet, and the “powder-puff” breed that has a long coat. The head of the Chinese Crested Dog is very fox like in shape and overall appearance. The eyes are almond shaped, very dark, alert and rather intense or focused looking. The ears are left natural and are not cropped and are spaced well to the sides of the head. The weight of the Chinese Crested is around 10-15 pounds, and the height is 11-15 inches.

PERSONALITY
Chinese Crested is a loving, funny and very intelligent dog that is relatively easy to care for. The Chinese Crested Dog is one breed of dog that does bond very strongly to its owners. The Chinese Crested has plenty of spirit and is cheerful, playful, and lively. He is also alert, intelligent, and inquisitive, and is quick to learn, although he can be very independent and strong willed.

TRAINING
Intelligent and willing to please his owner, the Chinese Crested has an ability to perform tricks and does well in obedience competition. The Chinese Crested Dog is an ideal dog for those that want a pet that can do unique and interesting tricks. Consistency is a must, however this breed can be relatively sensitive and should have a gentle trainer.

EXERCISE
They are very active indoors and require minimal exercise. They do enjoy outdoor walks and are good on the leash once properly socialized and acclimatized to being in new environments and places. Regular play sessions would be sufficient for this breed.

SOCIALIZATION
Chinese Crested does exceptionally well with children and other animals and is a well-adjusted breed. He gets along with other pets, although he can sometimes get a little jealous. When it comes to strangers he can be a little reserved and timid. Taking them out in public, providing lots of socialization as well as allowing them to just play and act as dogs is important.

LIVING CONDITIONS
The Chinese Crested does very well in apartment life and would do just fine without a fenced yard. The hairless variety is not suited to colder climates; if they are out in cold weather, they must wear a sweater.

GROOMING
Both varieties require certain amounts of grooming. The Puffs have a very soft and fine double coat that requires frequent brushing to avoid matting. Maintenance of the Hairless variety’s skin is similar to maintaining human skin. Hypoallergenic or oil-free moisturizing cream can keep the skin from becoming too dry when applied every other day or after bathing. Do not trim the nails too short to avoid pain and bleeding.

HEALTH ISSUES
The life expectancy of the Chinese Crested is around 13-16 years. The Chinese Crested Dog is susceptible to progressive retinal atrophy, lens luxation and glaucoma; the dog may also suffer from deafness, patellar luxation and seizures. Other health issUes include sensitivity to chemicals and medicines, acne, allergies, dental problems, Legg Perthes and skin problems.

HISTORY
The Crested dogs originated in Africa where they were called “African Hairless Terriers” are today more often found in Central and South America. The breed was registered with the AKC in 1991.
