GLEN OF IMAAL TERRIER
APPEARANCE
The Glen of Imaal is a medium-sized dog. The breed has a medium-length coat that is usually wheaten, blue, or brindle in color. the Glen of Imaal Terrier is a sturdy and robust looking dog with a large head and short, stumpy legs. The weight of the Glen of Imaal Terrier is around 35 pounds, and the height around 13-14 inches.
PERSONALITY
They are hard working and extremely loyal to their owners and have a harsh attitude when it comes to hunting down their prey. These dogs can be very willful and independent, and this makes them best suited to those with some experience when it comes to owning dogs. Spirited and energetic, this is a dog that loves to play and enjoys a range of activities.
TRAINING
Glen of Imaal Terrier’s are eager to learn and intelligent. This breed can be quite willful and attempt to dominate their owner. Being a sensitive breed, training should be consistent and should always include playtime. The Glen of Imaal will need strict and firm training.
EXERCISE
They enjoy daily walks but must always be securely leashed. At least a 20 to 30 minutes of walk done daily is desirable. They are able to make their own exercise either indoors or outdoors. A romp in the park or through the woods is a welcome treat for them. They make excellent travel companions as they enjoy going for car rides.
SOCIALIZATION
This breed gets along well with children, but is best suited to older children. They can be dog-aggressive so proper socialization is key. One should also be wary of the Glen when it is around small household pets, as its instinct is to hunt such animals. When it comes to strangers, the Glen of Imaal Terrier tends to be polite and sometimes reserved.
LIVING CONDITIONS
The Glen of Imaal Terrier breed is suitable for both apartment and rural living. They prefer a human environment and does not thrive in kennels. In urban homes with yards, the ideal fencing should have a foundation because this breed particularly likes to dig.
GROOMING
They shed little or even no hair, but they require stripping every six months. It is also important to minimize the amount of hair under their tail, in the ears, and between the pads of the feet. This can be done by trimming under the tail and plucking the ears and feet. The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a low shedder, and may therefore be suitable for those with allergies.
HEALTH ISSUES
The life expectancy of the Glen of Imaal Terrier is around 12-15 years. The Glen of Imaal Terrier is prone to skin allergies and some eye diseases, one being Progressive Retinal Atrophy. On the whole this dog is a very healthy breed.
HISTORY
The Glen of Imaal Terrier originates in Wicklow, Ireland, and was developed as a working terrier, proficient in badger-baiting and hunting of fox. The breed was registered with the AKC in 2004.
