BLACK RUSSIAN TERRIER
APPEARANCE
The Black Russian Terriers are very powerful dogs with extremely well developed muscles. The Black Russian Terrier has a double weatherproof coat. The outer coat is hard, wiry, and tight. The close-lying wavy coat is about 1.5-4 inches long. The Black Russian Terrier also grows eyebrows and a beard. The coloring of the coat is black, and can also be black with white hairs mixed in. These large dogs are around 26-29 inches in height, and weigh in at around 85-140 pounds.
PERSONALITY
The brave, observant and highly affectionate Black Russian Terrier wants and needs close human contact. The dog has a strong protective instinct, and is suspicious of strangers and quick to protect its owner. Like most other terriers, this dog does have something of a stubborn breed. He has a curious nature and likes to explore, so he should not be left loose outside of a secured area.
TRAINING
First, the Black Russian Terrier needs high socialization at a very young age because they are very protective. To be manageable, it must have a basic training. The Black Russian Terrier is a highly intelligent and focused dog and will train easily to house breaking and to be well mannered on a leash. They are most responsive to firm but positive reinforcement training. Due to their highly intelligent nature, they excel in obedience type training.
EXERCISE
Black Russian Terriers are happiest when doing some type of work, such as playing games, agility, obedience, or protection. Black Russian Terriers love to go for long walks. They love to be entertained and to romp and play. The great thing about the Black Russian Terrier is also that they love the water and the snow. Combining exercise and training is an excellent way for Black Russian Terriers to obtain their necessary level of activity.
SOCIALIZATION
This dog has a strong protective instinct, and is suspicious of strangers and quick to protect its owner. Even as an adult, this dog loves children, though females are more likely to play with them. However, do remember that these dogs are large, and he may inadvertently knock down a smaller child in play. These dogs can be dominant around other dogs that are not part of the household, but are generally okay with other pets in the household.
LIVING CONDITIONS
This breed will do well in urban, suburban or country setting with reasonable amounts of exercise. a small yard or a large yard makes no difference to them since they like to be very near their family at all times and want a lot of contact with people.
GROOMING
The best way to keep the coat in good condition is to brush and comb it regularly. However, it is essential when brushing the coat that it is brushed directly from the skin. It is also very important to use a coat conditioner that can be sprayed lightly onto the coat before brushing. This routine should be done about twice a week. This dog should be bathed about once a month.
HEALTH ISSUES
The Black Russian Terrier has a life expectancy of 10-12 years. The Black Russian Terrier is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. The ears, if not regularly checked, may be susceptible to otitis.
HISTORY
The Black Russian Terrier was first developed right after World War II by the Russian Red Army. It was designated as a police dog. The Black Russian Terrier was registered with the AKC in 2001.
