BOSTON TERRIER
APPEARANCE
The Boston Terrier is a small and sturdy dog, with a compact yet athletic build. They have big flat heads with no wrinkles, wide-set dark eyes, small erect ears, and a wide flat snout with an ample black nose. The body is strong and compact, with a straight back, muscular hindquarters, and a very short tail. The coat is short and smooth, and is either black or brindle with white markings on the face, chest, neck and forequarters. These dogs weigh in at around 14-25 pounds, and the height of the Boston Terrier is around 12-16 inches.
PERSONALITY
Boston Terriers are very loving, caring, wanting to please at all times. It takes a lot to make a Boston mad, but when they do get upset they walk away. They thrive on human interaction and on being an integral part of the family. The breed has an excellent disposition and a high degree of intelligence, which makes the Boston Terrier an incomparable companion. The Boston Terrier has a very sensitive nature and will be affected either positively or negatively by tone of voice or the home atmosphere and environment.
TRAINING
Bostons terriers are very easy to train. They may be difficult to housebreak and the crate training method is recommended. Due to their highly sensitive nature harsh and heavy-handed methods must never be used. Stay consistent and take at least a few minutes to train each day. Do not stretch each a training period too long or your Boston will get bored. Turn training into a game you both will enjoy, that way your Boston won’t get bored and nether will you.
EXERCISE
Bostons terriers exercise needs are moderate.They love going for walks, however interactive play provides them with more than enough exercise with the attention he craves and loves. They benefit from and enjoy securely leashed walks, family play sessions, and free play in a safely fenced area.
SOCIALIZATION
They do best in a home with children over the age of eight years and are exceedingly good with the elderly. The nature of this breed makes them ideal for inexperienced dog owners as well as the more experienced, and also ideal for households with children and other pets.They will generally get along with non-canine pets, although males may fight with other dogs.
LIVING CONDITIONS
Boston Terriers do well in an apartment, condominium, or city dwelling provided they are given sufficient exercise, attention, and stimulation. They are not “outside” dogs. Take care, however, to keep your Boston warm during the winter months, as this easy to care for coat does not provide much in the way of warmth. Also note that like most short-muzzled dogs, the Boston Terrier does not do well in heat.
GROOMING
Boston Terriers do not shed much and little grooming is needed. An occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush is enough. However the face should be cleaned with a damp cloth daily and nails need to be clipped occasionally. Check the eyes and skin regularly to reduce the chances of infection or problems. Occasional bathing is okay when necessary.
HEALTH ISSUES
The lifespan of the Boston Terrier is around 10-14 years. A fairly health breed, the Boston Terrier nonetheless occasionally suffers from patellar luxation, allergies, constricted nostrils, deafness and seizures. Because he is a very short haired dog, extreme heat can make him susceptible to sunstroke. He may also suffer respiratory problems if over-exercised because of his short muzzle.
HISTORY
As their name implies, this breed was developed in Boston, Massachusetts. Once bred for fighting, this breed was at the centre of controversy in the nineteenth century when bulldog owners and enthusiasts tried to discredit the breed. The Boston Terrier was registered with the AKC in 1893.
