BULLMASTIFF

APPEARANCE
The Bullmastiff is a large, powerful breed with an alert and intelligent appearance. The dog has a muscular body covered by short hair. The tight coat is red, brindle, or fawn in color and the chest may have a small white marking. The head has wrinkled skin on the surface and is broad in size, though short. With a black nose and larger nostrils, the Bullmastiff is punctuated by piercing hazel eyes that have a focused and intelligent appearance. The weight of the Bullmastiff is around 100-135 pounds, and the height is around 24-27 inches.

PERSONALITY
A Bullmastiff is courageous, extremely loyal to its family, calm, and loving. It has a very strong protective instinct and will defend against any threat to its owners, as well as any threat to its territory. Bullmastiffs become intensely attached to their families. In the presence of these people it trusts, it will be docile and loving. Calm by nature, this dog breed is fearless and willful at the same time. If they are trained when they are young, they can be the perfect dog for a family, even with children.

TRAINING
With such a strong appearance, the Bullmastiff is impressive enough in its natural abilities of intimidation, but you need to get a handle on training this dog breed early in its life. The Bullmastiff is sensitive to the tone of your voice, but should be handled firmly if this breed is to succeed in training. Can do well in obedience training, and does exceptionally well as a guard or watch dog.

EXERCISE
This is a dog that will actually prefer to be lazy and to lay around the house - perfect for the not so active person. However, this isn’t a healthy practice for them, so it’s advised that you take this dog out for regular exercise and daily walks to encourage this dog to stay in shape. The Bullmastiff does enjoy long walks or jogs, and would do well with an average sized yard.

SOCIALIZATION
If you have children then you will normally find that the Bullmastiff gets along well with them, and when raised and properly socialized with children this breed is an excellent playmate, although his size may prove a problem around smaller children. Depending on the Bullmastiff, it may or may not get along with other dogs. This largely depends on whether it has been socialized with other dogs when it was young. In many cases, the male Bullmastiff will not do well with other male dogs, so this can be problematic.

LIVING CONDITIONS
They are happiest when they are spending time with their family, and are best suited as indoor pets. Be aware that bullmastiffs are very intolerant of extreme heat. Because of their shortened muzzles, you must take care to be sure they do no overheat on warm days.

GROOMING
Regular brushing will help you manage the shine and the health of the fur. Using a short coarse bristle brush on the fur at least once a week will allow you to remove any dead or loose fur. Shampoo this breed whenever you feel it’s necessary, but it’s not something you need to do on a regular basis. Regularly check ears, mouth, and nose as well as the skin. Unusual smells that come from your dog will also need a checkup by the vet.

HEALTH ISSUES
The lifespan for a Bullmastiff is generally from 8-11 years. The Bullmastiff is prone to cancer, eyelid problems, hip dysplasia and tumors. It tends to bloat when fed. It’s better to give it a few little plates than a big one.

HISTORY
The Bullmastiff, which originates from England, is a cross between the Mastiff breed and the Bulldog. We can still find traces of Mastiff Bulldog types back to 1795. This breed was registered with the AKC in 1934.
